Abstract

The sun is the origin of renewable energies such as solar and wind energies. For this reason, the renewable energies are recognized as inexhaustible resources. On the other hand, biomass and geothermal energies have different origins, plants and subsurface resources, which need to take time to regenerate as renewables. We will learn what kind of features renewable energy has and how to generate electricity.
Geothermal power generation utilizes geothermal resource, which is located at subsurface and the early development process such as survey, investigation and exploration are important. Geothermal resources are unevenly distributed in the geological layers and need to excavate the wells to take out the resources. Risks are sometimes high to hesitate the development. Financial supports are necessary.
Solar power plants are introduced in many areas of Kyushu due to its ease of installation. However, problems such as FIT (Feed In Tariff) and the connection to the national grid are also pointed out. The geothermal resource, which is the third largest amount of worldwide resources in Japan, is limited to small-scale power generation in Kumamoto Prefecture. We have to consider to promote geothermal resource development in Kumamoto.
