AbstractThis intensive, interactive course provides students with an understanding of proper ethics of the scientific process, with the ultimate goal being a successful research career founded on a experimental design that takes into account the moral principles researchers grapple with daily. Students will gain experience in technical writing, including learning ways to avoid plagiarism, as well as guidelines for establishing ethical and equitable collaborations on research projects and publications, mentoring students and volunteer participants, obtaining proper permission for use of intellectual property and photo and video documentation, following guidelines for research involving live subjects, and respecting standards for data acquisition, management and deposition.  The course also addresses peer-review responsibilities, as well as conflict of interest and commitment, appropriate professional behavior at work and in the public eye, and whistle-blowing. In addition to being a crash-course demonstrating the scientific community’s efforts to prevent ethical violations, students will work together to analyze case studies related to research ethics.
