Kumamoto University’s Correspondence to the Outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV)(English translation)

The outbreak of Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) has been reported in Wuhan city, Hubei
Province, the People’s Republic of China, and the infection has been rapidly spreading not only
inside of the country but also to the other part of the world. In response to the Public Health
Emergency of International Concern declared by World Health Organization, at Kumamoto
University, all faculty members, professors, and students are requested to do as follows to
control/prevent the virus transmission;
– Stay calm and do not over react
– Cover your mouth with your sleeve when cough and wear a mask at all times
– Wash your hands frequently

1. Correspondence of Faculty Members and Students
Please do not travel to any part of Hubei Province (including both personal and business
trips,) also, please avoid taking non-emergency and/or unnecessary trips to the other
provinces or the autonomous regions of China (as at January 31, 2020.)
When you plan a business trip abroad, please ensure to check and follow the most up-todate
information by accessing the following links;

In addition to above, please ensure to notify of your trip to any General Affairs Division
officer or Educational Affairs Division officers at your faculty/school prior to the trip.
If any cold/flu-like symptoms including a high-fever appear within 14 days after returning
from your trip, refrain from coming to the University, then please see a physician at any
medical clinic with a notification to them prior to your visitation. Also, during the first contact
to the medical clinic, please inform them of your travel history if you have visited Wuhan city.
After seeing a physician, please report to the General Affairs Division or the Educational Affairs
Division at your faculty/school.

2. Establishing the Crisis Management Headquarters for Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV)
For the prevention and the controlling the spread of virus infection, KU will establish the Crisis
Management Headquarters to call a closure of classes or entire University when necessary.
To accommodate to the constantly-changing situation, the Headquarters will monitor the
following “3. Assumable Future Events” content closely, make appropriate decisions to
equivalent situation, and inform all staff members and students regarding the future
countermeasure; therefore, please beware of any newly information to be released.

3. Assumable Future Events
① Public Health Emergency of International Concern declared by WHO (has already been
declared on January 30, 2020 with not travel restrictions)
② A confirmed case or a suspected case found among the University staff members and
students (including their co-living family members)
③ A suspected case of secondary transmission/infection triggered by a University staff
member

4. KU’s Correspondence to the Above Events
① Restriction of business trips both inside of Japan and aboard
② and ③ Closure of classes and/or Closure of University
* This is subject to change as each situation will be observed then an appropriate solution will be
proposed
