【Abstract】
This lecture series on “Gender Equity in Higher Education: Breaking Barriers and Building Futures” enables students to understand the importance of gender equity in academic institutions, recognise the barriers that limit opportunities for underrepresented genders, and explore strategies to create inclusive, supportive, and equitable learning environments.
Lecture 1 : provides the overarching EDI framework that is applied to students in higher education, emphasizing their role in promoting fairness, particularly focusing on gender equity. It also introduces the key learning objectives, goals for each lecture, and the assessment methods used by the facilitators. The next six lectures and interactive sessions offer an interdisciplinary focus on the basis of gender inequities, its consequences and strategies in overcoming gender inequalities and inequities:
Lecture 2: Challenges and opportunities faced by postgraduate students at higher education institutions (HEIs) when assessed through an EDI lens.
Lecture 3: Challenges and opportunities faced by young people on social media when assessed through Feminist Principles of the Internet.
Lecture 4: The role that genetics and biology play in sex and gender determination in order to recognise and respect differences that matter.
Lecture 5: The role that genetics and environmental factors play in shaping cognition, emotion, and social behaviour that potentially impact learning, participation, and performance in STEM.
Lecture 6: the sex-differentiated role of stress responses in the brain and how these differences influence mental health and wellbeing among students in HEIs.
Lecture 7: The gap between gender justice–which foregrounds gender equity, diversity and inclusivity (GEDI)–as conceptualised within a rights framework and the gap experienced by many who fall outside heteronormative constructs.
Lecture 8: Synthesis of the GEDI concepts used, its application (biological, neurological, structural, cultural) and strategies in realising not just individual mental health and wellbeing but also a society that is based on principles of mutuality, reciprocity, and social justice for all.
