Department of Materials Science and Applied Chemistry

Education Goals

This department aims to educate its students in materials engineering, material chemistry, and biochemistry. We combine high-level expert knowledge with technology in each of these areas, engaging with various problems with a holistic mindset, fostering the creativity, proactivity, and willingness to take on new challenges necessary to discover and resolve these problems. We aim to train students to become practitioners who will pioneer innovative materials in order to contribute to the sustainable development of the global community.

Education Objectives

This department aims to equip students with expert-level knowledge of materials engineering, material chemistry, and biochemistry so that they can contribute to developing and finding sustainable solutions in the areas of science, technology, and industry, and to train them to become professionals capable of using state-of-the-art technology.

What We Offer

For each of the areas of specialty, including materials engineering, material chemistry, and biochemistry, we offer courses that cover a wide area of expertise, and each student will be able to choose which courses they want to take based on their own targets and goals. We have designed an educational program where students will have the opportunity to keep on top of trends in cutting-edge research, complete internships, and present their research results on an international stage. In addition, they will receive hands-on education by choosing a research theme from a large pool of modern research topics, explore their topic, draft a proposal, and carry out their research. By doing so, they will be better equipped to be active on the global stage as researchers and technicians.

Chemistry and Bioscience

Education Goals

This education program provides education in the fundamentals of chemistry and bioscience, including chemistry, biology, and physics, from the basics to applications in a logical progression. By doing so we aspire to seek out new basic truths in applied chemistry, as well as train future practitioners who will work creatively to open up the field to new discoveries.

Education Objectives

This education program has established the following objectives in order to accomplish these goals, while continuing to respect academic freedom.

  1. We will equip students with a wide range of knowledge in the field of chemistry and bioscience, instilling in them a passion toward pursuing the essence of biochemistry and an appreciation of its nuances.
  2. We will train students in the skills needed for research and development in the field of chemistry and bioscience, encouraging creativity and a motivation to forge ahead with research activities.
  3. We will imbue students with morality and a sense of responsibility as relates to science and technology, as well as provide the abilities necessary to work independently toward solving environmental and social issues through from the standpoint of chemistry and bioscience.
  4. We will foster students’ abilities to contribute to development in the field of chemistry and bioscience and be active on the world stage.
What We Offer

Our program is designed so that students can use the fundamental knowledge gained from subjects in biochemistry to take courses in the field of applied and developmental chemistry and bioscience. We also have courses in which students will read, compile, and present several English-language academic papers, fostering their abilities to compile and process research from a global perspective. Furthermore, we aim to give students the ability to discover research problems and draft and carry out methods for solving them from a global perspective.

Chemistry and Materials

Education Goals

In order to realize a sustainable and safe recycling-oriented society, we must use material chemistry as a focal point from which to gain a deep understanding of the relation between chemical structure and function at the atomic/molecular level. It is also essential to develop new materials that can be controlled at the nano level. In this education program, students will learn the building blocks of material chemistry including chemistry, physics, and biology in a logical progression from the basics to their applications, developing a generation of scientists who have the practical research abilities needed to meet the demands of an ever-evolving society and face various problems from a scientific standpoint.

What We Offer

We have created an education program through which students can systematically deepen their knowledge in specific areas of the material sciences while aiming to maintain a balance of specificity and broader knowledge in order to avoid the pitfalls that may come with overspecialization. Our education program aims to provide a hands-on education. With each research theme, students will read and analyze several English-language academic papers and gain the ability to understand research trends both in Japan and abroad, and they will use this knowledge as a foundation to establish their own experiment plans and carry out research under them. We also have a number of professors who will instruct students outside the normal laboratory setting.

Materials Science and Engineering

Education Goals

We aim to train students to become experts who have the comprehensive intellect necessary to gain a thorough understanding of the field, who will discover the physical and chemical properties of the materials necessary for building a new materials system that can contribute to the sustained development of a thriving society, who will make processes more efficient, and who have foundational knowledge and the ability to apply technology as it relates to recycling so that they can respond flexibly to the many fluctuating needs of society from a scientific and technological standpoint based in material science.

Education Objectives
  1. We aim to organize an education program for training students to become professionals. In order to measure its effectiveness, we have continuous opportunities for students to evaluate their classes, FD activities among our professors, self-evaluation, and external evaluation, as we strive for constant program improvement and balance.
  2. We will continue to refine our expert-level education in the material sciences in order to equip students with the abilities to explore material structure, physical and chemical properties, and mechanical features from a broad perspective from the nano level to the macro level.
  3. We will strive to provide a rich education in the essential foundational theories needed for a comprehensive intellect that leads to thorough expertise.
  4. We will encourage students to gather new information and extrapolate problems, providing the most up-to-date information about new materials and recycling and the environment, both in Japan and abroad, so that students can solve problems in each of the research areas related to creating new materials, evaluating their properties, and the manufacturing process and recycling thereof.
  5. We will develop students’ abilities to discover issues, draft and carry out experiments, see issues from an academic viewpoint, make objective decisions, question information, have insight, think logically, and express themselves, through courses and dissertation research that require students to search, compile, and give oral presentations on academic papers.
What We Offer

This program is designed so that students can use the knowledge gained at the undergraduate level to take courses that cover materials engineering at a deeper level or take courses in applied and developmental subjects. This program is also designed so that students can gain the ability to gather information from the international community and use it to and draft and carry out research methods that aim to discover and resolve problems in each of the research areas related to creating new materials, evaluating their properties, and the manufacturing process and recycling thereof.
